Fortnite has taken the world by storm since its release in 2017 and the Battle Royale genre as a whole has done the same. The game is set in a massive battlefield where 100 players fight it out until only one person remains. Fortnite has also stepped into the esports world, mainly through the Fortnite World Cup that had one of the biggest prize pools in history in 2019.
Fortnite is a Battle Royal game, or a survival game, where 100 players are thrown into combat and the winner is the last one standing. The games themselves are incredibly fast and actionpacked, especially towards the end. All players start each game with a basic axe and nothing else. From there the players can scavenge for weapons and different types of utility to help them overcome their enemies.
What makes Fortnite unique compared to other similar games is the ability to build structures on the fly. Materials are gathered throughout the game and these are used to build ramps, defense structures and really anything the player can come up with, that would help them in battle. Several different strategies can be used to overcome the other 99 players, which range from aggressive ones where enemies are taken out, to pure defensive ones where you wait your opposition out.
There is however a limiting factor here - the storm, which hurts players in it, but there is a barrier that protects players from it during the game. The protective barrier does shrink in size the longer the game progresses. Eventually the space will be really, really small and if you step outside you will quickly be eliminated. Fortnite is most commonly played solo or duo, which was also the two formats used in the first World Championship for the game in 2019.
A Battle Royale game is any game where the last person or team standing wins the game. Seemingly based off of the Japanese novel by Koushun Takami, Battle Royale, as well as the more popular Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins where the main focus of the plot revolves around a group of children who are thrown into a battleground and forced to kill each other with weapons and tools that are scattered around the area, where the remaining (usually one) child is allowed to return to their home. Yes this may seem a little grotesque and unfortunately, it is. When you consider it is a video game however, then it requires a lot of skill and perfect reaction time to consistently be the one on top.
Fortnite has a very unique take on the genre whereas those before it were meant to be wartorn and realistic battle zones with actual weapons and equipment, Epic wanted to appeal to more people and ages as well as give themselves some room to do crazy things. Fortnite uses a cartoon art style with the ability to collect materials to build walls, and hosts a number of unrealistic equipment.
There is a campaign that you can play if you purchase the game, but the most popular format, the Battle Royale, is completely free, with some exceptions to cosmetics and the overly popular Battle Pass that created waves on its own in video game marketing. The BR mode offers a variety of options within itself with a Solo, Duo, or Squad mode with casual and ranked matches. The main ranked mode is dubbed Arena Mode and hosts solo, duo and trio queues for anyone that wants to play at a more competitive level whether alone or with friends. The casual modes mirror the Arena modes options.
There are some other, for fun, modes that don’t really have much to do with the BR setting of the game, but offer a good way to practice various aspects of it. Some are community made like challenge obstacle courses, while others were implemented by Epic to add some flavor to the game for the more casual players.
Yes. However, the amount of tournaments that can compete with the biggest esports in the world, is still low. This is the reason why a lot of betting sites still haven’t included Fortnite in their selections. The massive hype around the World Cup 2019 in Fortnite did spark the esports for the game, but since then we haven’t seen anywhere close to that level of tournament again. With all that said there are still quite a few betting operators offering odds on Fortnite when big tournaments do happen. Make sure to check our recommended operators under the betting section to learn more.
